Mechatronics @THWS

Focus of the Degree Programme

Frontview of Campus I

The degree programme Mechatronics at THWS is devised to meet the multidisciplinary requirements of today’s industry. In addition to delivering a solid understanding of the key areas, this programme aims to develop further skills needed to carry out and manage engineering projects. Especially designed courses enable students to identify the environmental impact of technology and encourage them to behave responsibly. Due to elective modules, the students may tailor their course contents according to their own inclinations and interests without making compromises. The practice-oriented learning environment at THWS makes them capable of applying the know-how and scientific methods to solve engineering problems independently. This programme also focuses on personality development by offering foreign languages, interaction in multicultural teams, soft skills and further social competences. The degree programme can also serve as a solid fundament for graduate studies.

Faculties and Institutes

Mechatronics is offered as a joint programme by two future-oriented engineering faculties: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Members of both faculties have a vast industrial experience and are actively involved in research and development activities in cooperation with local and multinational industry. Both faculties have established state-of-the-art research and teaching labs equipped with modern apparatus and up-to-date experimental facilities. Several research institutes and technology transfer centres are established by the University in order to enhance R&D activities and cooperation with the industry. From the point of view of mechatronics the institutes like Technology Transfer Centre for E-Mobility (TTZ-EMO), Institute of Medical Engineering at the Competence Centre Mainfranken (IMES), Institute for Power Engineering and High Voltage Technology at the Competence Centre Mainfranken (IEHT) are of special interest.

Language of Instruction

The language of instruction throughout the coursework is English. Students need a solid knowledge of English in order to attend academic activities and take examinations. Special courses are offered to improve German language skills also. It is also possible to select some subjects from the Twin programme offered in German. In addition to their engineering expertise, THWS graduates have a perfect combination of German and English language skills and are, therefore, well qualified for a successful career in an international environment.

University Location

The whole degree programme is offered at the THWS location Schweinfurt, which is the industrial hub of Lower Franconia, the northern part of the federal state of Bavaria. Several global players in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive, electro-mobility, medical systems and automation have their major operations or headquarters in Schweinfurt. Industrial corporations like FAG / Schaeffler Group, SKF, ZF AG, Fresenius Medical Care and Bosch Rexroth are some common examples. Apart from Schweinfurt city there are lots of industrial zones within a radius of 100km. The region as a whole offers plenty of opportunities for internships, theses and employment for mechatronics engineers.
